17 Books I'd Like to Read in 2017

Reading is having a bit of a moment in my life! I recently wrote a post sharing 4 of my tips to read more in the new year, and at the end of the post I added a quick snippet of some books I'd like to read during the year. I thought I'd do a more in depth post with 17 books I'd like to read this year and why I want to read them!

4 Podcasts You Should Listen To

I read somewhere that the average American listens to over two hours worth of radio each day. I don't know about you, but I would way rather be learning something during that time instead of listening to three different radio stations play the same ten songs on repeat. Podcasts are such a great way to learn something new and listening to podcasts is a lot more productive than listening to the radio (unless it's NPR or something). Here are four of the podcasts I've been listening to the most lately.

1) That's So Retrograde
This is my new podcast addiction! It is a wellness podcast where each week Elizabeth Knott and Stephanie Simbari interview wellness gurus to learn about their practices. They've had everyone on the show from Ashley Tisdale to Sarah Silverman and Amanda Chantal Bacon. If you're at all interested in new wellness practices such as juicing, meditation, cleansing, then this is a good place to start.

2) Ladies Who Lunch
This podcast is the brainchild of two youtubers, Ingrid Nilsen and Cat Valdes. Ladies Who Lunch is different from the other podcasts because there's no set theme. Each week covers a different topic relating to life with the two co-hosts sharing their experiences on the topic. This podcasts really just feels like girl talk and while it's definitely not educational on the same level as the other three, you still walk away learning something new.

3) The Minimalists Podcasts
This podcast is all about minimalism. I will admit, of the four listed, this is the podcast that I listen to the least because I found that it gets a bit repetitive. A lot of the episodes are question and answer format where Joshua Fields Milburn and Ryan Nicodemus answer questions about how to lead a more minimal life. If you're new in to minimalism or interested in the theory behind it, this is a good listen.

4) Open Sky Fitness
This podcasts does all things fitness and diet related. Some podcast episodes are interviews with people in the field while others are question and answer. The thing about this podcast is that unless you're really into fitness, you'll find some episodes don't resonate as much as others. For me, I only listen to the episodes that sound interesting to me because I don't think it's a good use of time to learn about crossfit when that's just something that I'm not interested in.

Let me know in the comments what podcasts you like to listen to and if you have any recommendations for me! I'd also like to mention that I enjoy the AOL Build Series podcasts for more pop culture related interviews and that the Beta Sandwich podcast (while not currently producing new episodes) was my favorite for science news.

My Week on Instagram #46

Last week was my last full week back in Hawaii for Winter Break, so I thought I would do a MWOI post sharing the behind the scenes of a few instagram posts. If you've missed any of the previous posts, here is the full archive of the series!

Saturday 1/14/17
On Saturday my mom and I went to lunch at a trendy new restaurant. My mom had been to Piggy Smalls before, but I hadn't and she wanted to take me. This picture is of the Hanoi Shrimp Cold Noodle, which I ordered, and the Vegan Pho, which my mom got. A full review (with more pictures) is going up on my travel blog, Sisi Travels, soon if you want to know what I thought about the restaurant.

Sunday 1/15/17
On Sunday I went on a hike with my mom and dad. This was a hike that we used to do with my brother when we were younger, but hadn't done in years! It was a two hour, 4.8 mile loop through the mountains. This picture was taken in the beginning, when I was still feeling good, although near the end I was dying because I hadn't eaten enough before doing the hike and my glycogen stores were completely drained.
*not pictured: me gorging on oreos on the walk to the car so I wouldn't pass out.

So that's it for this week's MWOI post! Leave your instagram handles in the comments so I can check out your profiles, and follow me @miss_sienna if you want!

The Blog Turns 4!

Four years ago, on 1/15/13, a fifteen year old girl from Hawaii started a blog in her room on a whim. She never thought that the blog would lead to anything. It was a hobby, a way to waste time after school instead of doing homework. Now, four years later, that blog has readers, over a thousand posts, and is still going strong.

I'm not going to get to sappy over here, but today, the blog turns four and I couldn't be happier about it. This blog has evolved with me through the years and has taught me so much. I never thought that I would have the chance to work with the brands I have and that people would actually want to read what I write. I couldn't be more blessed to have readers as amazing as you all, who inspire me each and every day to write, photograph, and try new things.

This year is going to be super exciting. This blog is going to shift slightly towards wellness, while still keeping beauty/fashion/college at it's core. I'm starting a new series on my youtube channel, and am definitely going to post more often and regularly.

Whether you're a long time reader, or a new one, I want to say thank you for reading, I hope you like the content, and I can't wait for you to see what's coming in the future!

4 Tips To Read More in the New Year

A popular new year resolution is always "to read more." If you've seen the post about my personal new year resolutions, you would know that I haven't made specific goals for the year, but instead opted to make my goals broader. As a part of my "be selfish" goal, I've decided to try read more. In high school if I never read outside of class, it was okay because I was still reading for English. But now, all my classes are science based and if I don't actively focus on reading, it just won't happen. Here are some of the tips and tricks I'll be implementing in my life to read more in the new year.

New Series: A Week of Wellness

One of my new year resolutions this year is to be more selfish (to read more in depth about my resolutions, click here!). To me, this means focusing on myself first and foremost and improving my overall wellness. I don't have any concrete ways to do that, so I decided to document it all in a little youtube series!

My Week on Instagram #45

New Year, same series?
I've been contemplating ending the MWOI series for a while now because I haven't been posting as much on my instagram, so these posts have been extremely short these past few months. I think that I'll keep doing these posts for a little more, but if I don't start posting on my instagram more, I'll tone it down to once every two weeks or once a month instead. Anyway, I have been back in Hawaii for a couple weeks now and have just under two more weeks left before flying back to snowy Reno, so I've been busy soaking up as much sunshine as I can. Here's what I've posted on Instagram this past week!

Shows I'm Currently Watching (Winter 2016)

I tend to not watch a lot of new television because I don't have cable and Hulu has ads, so a lot of times it's simply easier to watch something old on Netflix. With that being said, I've spent the last few days since I finished finals binge watching the **** out of current shows. Here's what I've been watching.

New Year Resolutions For 2017

Happy New Year!
People either love New Year resolutions or despise them, with no middle ground. I know people that don't like resolutions believe that people should actively be making changes throughout the year instead of saving them for January 1st. I 1000% agree with this, but I love making resolutions. There's something romantic about crafting your future self through goals you make at the start of a new year, even if these goals never live past February.

Memories From 2016

2016 was a bittersweet year for me. A lot of good happened, but that was balanced out by many personal difficulties. We're going through the good and the bad of the past years in this post, and I'll be sharing some of my favorite pictures from this past year too!

January:

  • First month of me having my drivers license back in Hawaii, so I took my mom's car and went out a lot
  • Got to go to the beach and see my friends from high school that I never really see in person except for summer and winter breaks

Best Posts of 2016

If you've been reading the blog for a while now, you may have realized that 2016 was a transition year for me. In terms of content, I shifted from being heavily beauty and fashion oriented into more lifestyle content. I definitely got busier with school and posted less on the blog than in previous years, but I published content that I am really proud of. Here are some of my best posts of 2016. These were either the most read by you, or posts that I personally really enjoyed writing and that hopefully you will enjoy reading.

3 Tips For Buying Things As A Minimalist
This year I dabbled in minimalism more. I spend about 3/4 of the year in Reno and 1/4 of the year in Hawaii and I found that it is a lot easier to travel when I don't have a lot of things. These are three tips that will help you determine whether something is worth buying and how that item will add value to your life.

My Week on Instagram #44

Hi guys!
Wow, I've been slacking with my blog posts and youtube videos! This is another my week on instagram post, although it's not going to be a "week" as much as a "month" because I've gotten pretty behind on this series. I'm back in Hawaii until 1/20, so hopefully I can take and post more pictures before I leave!

Haha don't hate me! This is from over a month ago! It was taken in March when I was in Portland at a Trail Blazer's vs. Mavericks game with my friend Kalyn. I posted it because it was her birthday (and coincidentally Thanksgiving).

This was a picture taken over the summer at my favorite beach ever! I posted it because I was slightly homesick and very actually sick with the flu.

This was my Christmas post! It's a family picture, which is especially meaningful considering last Christmas my brother was studying abroad so our whole family wasn't together. I posted it because it was the nicest family picture we have even though that small piece of hair on my forehead bothers me to death!

So I hope you enjoyed playing catch up with me in this post! I promise I'll try to be more consistent in the new year! You can read the previous My Week on Instagram posts here if you're interested!
