How to be a Good Roommate When Sick

So, you tried to stay healthy when everyone else was sick, but you caught the bug too. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us (written by the girl very sick in the middle of finals). I've been living with roommates for the past couple years and I'm sure many of you live with other people, so here are my tips for being a courteous roommate when sick.

1) Quarantine Yourself
If you're sick with something very contagious (like the flu), please quarantine yourself until you're not contagious anymore. A good rule of thumb is if you have a fever you're contagious, although use your own judgement. This will hopefully prevent you from infecting everyone else.

2) Disinfect
I am a firm believer that if you're the sick individual you're responsible for disinfecting everything. Even just taking a clorox wipe to all the handles, remotes, and switches helps cut down on the amount of transmittable germs. Also, if your roommate gets sick with whatever you have, if they've seen you disinfecting, they're less likely to be mad (this comes from personal experience).

3) Do Basic Chores
If you're sick with the flu, nobody expects you to whip out the vacuum and clean the whole house. But do your dishes! Nobody wants to deal with dishes that are covered with your germs and it's annoying to have dirty dishes pile up in the sink for days. Load the dishwasher, take five minutes to tackle your dishes, eat off of disposable plates! Just make sure nobody else has to take responsibility for your messes.

I feel like a lot of this is common sense, but you'd be surprised how many people don't consider these factors when sick. Let me know in the comments if you have anything to add to this list! And if you're not sick, (lucky duck), check out these tips to make sure you stay that way!
