24 Hour Social Media Detox

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a day spent reflecting on the things your grateful for with family and friends. This Thanksgiving, I'm going to challenge you to take a 24 hour social media detox.

What is a 24 hour social media detox?
It's pretty much what it sounds like! 24 hours without social media. This means no instagram, snapchat, twitter, tumblr, linkedin, facebook... Obviously there are exceptions to this, especially if your job relies on the use of social media, so this isn't a hard and fast rule. A 24 hour social media detox doesn't even really need to be 24 hours. The main thing that it needs to have is intent.

To understand the social media detox, you have to first admit to yourself how often you're online and how it is affecting you. If you're anything like me, I spend so much time mindlessly scrolling when I could be doing much more productive things. Or I am on my phone when I'm talking to someone in person and am never truly engaged in whatever conversation I'm having in real life. If these things describe you, it may be time for a detox.

How to do the detox?
Your method will depend on the level of willpower that you have. One one hand you could just vow not to go on social media for the day and hold yourself to that. You could also delete the apps (not the accounts, just the app) from your phone so you have no choice but to not check it for the day.

What to do instead?
You may find that you have more time than you realize once you stop checking your phone. Use this time to call a friend, go on a walk, people watch, or read!

At the end of this, the goal is mindfulness. Once you know and realize how much time you spend online, you can implement changes to make sure your actions align with your beliefs.

Honestly? I'm going to do the detox, but probably not this week. I am staying in Reno for the holiday by myself, so my Thanksgiving will be spent writing papers and filling out applications for various things. But if you're going home for the holiday, if you're spending it with family, think about doing the 24 hour social media detox during that time so you can spend quality time with the people you love.

How to Stay Healthy When Everyone is Sick

We are quickly approaching the most stressful time of the year. The holidays are upon us and people are finding themselves overwhelmed and overworked. Whether you work in an office or are a student in school, it becomes difficult to stay healthy when it seems like everyone around you is sick. Here are 5 ways to stay healthy this winter.

1) Get a Flu Shot
This is by far the easiest thing to do and one of the best. We are already into flu season, but if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, you should still get it. Most flu shots are covered by insurance, and if you're a student, check and see if your health center gives them out for free. On a side note here, make sure that you get the physical shot and not the nasal spray because those have been proven to be very ineffective.

2) Hygiene
Hygiene is always important, but more so when you know that germs are going around. Wash your hands and make sure that you continue to disinfect high contact surfaces such as handles, remotes, and phones. If you can, carrying a small container of hand sanitizer and using it consistently, is one of the best ways to stay on top of your hygiene.

3) Sleep & Stress
Stress is known to suppress the human immune system as does lack of sleep. Stress tends to build this time of year as people try to figure out spending and finances, travel itineraries, along with the typical day to day stress. Try to minimize the amount of stress you carry with you through meditation, yoga, journaling, or mindful breathing. Sleep is another thing that tends to get neglected this time of year, especially for students. Try to shoot for at least 6 hours of sleep each night, although 8 would be ideal.

4) Eat Well, Sweat More
Diet is the most important part of health. Nobody wants to be on a diet this time of year, especially when there are Thanksgiving feasts to be had. Practice moderation, make sure you're consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables, and limit the amount of processed foods and baked goods that you consume.
Fitness is another thing that impacts how we feel. Try to break a sweat daily, whether that's in the gym, outside, or in the comfort of your own home.

5) Supplement Wisely
I am not a huge fan of taking supplements because the industry is so unregulated that you never really know what you're consuming. With that being said, I've been taking Zicam for the past few days because I've been feeling under the weather, and I think that it's been helping. If you feel a cold coming on, definitely consider taking Airborne, Emergen C, Zicam, or another supplement if you think it could help.

Let me know in the comments if you have any tips on how to stay healthy during the winter! Also, make sure you're following this blog on bloglovin and youtube because there may or may not be a few holiday giveaways in the near future! ;)

My Week on Instagram #43

I've been so bad about posting on Instagram lately! It's been a couple weeks since my last MWOI post, but I have one image to write about today.

A photo posted by SIENNA 🐶 (@miss_sienna) on

I didn't have school on Friday because of Veteran's day so I got to go on a date. The guy I've been seeing works in the parks so we picnicked and went park hopping for a couple hours. At one of these parks I found a bench near the river, which is where I took this picture. It felt like fall with the leaves falling all around us, but luckily for me it wasn't too cold so I could sit for a bit without freezing.

Wow, this was such a short post! But that's all I got for today! Let me know in the comments what types of posts/videos you'd like to see for the holiday season and make sure you're following me on instagram @miss_sienna so you don't miss anything! If you've missed any of my previous my week on instagram posts, you can check out the full archive of them here.

I've had the shop page on my blog for a while now, but I haven't been too good about keeping up with it. The goal was to update it seasonally, which I finally got around to doing tonight! If you haven't taken the time to check out that page, I thought I'd also post the widget here in case you'd like to see some makeup, shoes, clothing, accessories, and home decor that I am loving for Winter 2016! This (and all my widgets) are shopable, so if you see something you like, click the image!

A lot of these items (especially the makeup and home decor) could also double as good Christmas gifts! I've written countless Christmas gift guides the past couple years, but I definitely plan on making a couple this year if that's something you're interested in! Let me know in the comments what types of content you want for the holidays and make sure you're following me on bloglovin so you don't miss new posts!

Tips for Flawless Lips and 3 Holiday Lip Colors

The holiday season is the perfect time to step up your makeup game with a bold lip! Whether you have a specific shade in mind or are looking for something new (three of my favorites are below!), we can all agree that the application is just as important as the color! Here are a few of my favorite tips to make sure your lips look flawless at your soirees!

1) Exfoliate and Hydrate!
It's impossible to get a flawless application when your lips aren't properly prepped! You can use a store bought one (like this vanilla bean sugar scrub), an old toothbrush, a wet washcloth, or even a mixture of sugar and oil! It is especially important to remove dead skin if you're wearing a matte because the finish can accentuate any flakes.
Now that you've exfoliated, it's time to hydrate! Using something like an evolution of smooth lip balm will make sure your lips are in tip top shape.

2) Conceal
One of the oldest tricks in the book is to use concealer to outline your lips so your lip color really pops. This isn't a step that I do everyday, but if you're wearing a bold shade for a special occasion, it really makes all the difference! While you're at it, pop a highlighter on your cupids bow to make your lips shine.

Now for my favorite lippies! These three shades have survived my countless makeup purges, and have a special place in my minimalist makeup collection

1) ELF: RAVISHING ROSE (bottom swatch)
I originally bought this lipstick for my senior prom, but it has become one of my favorites. It is the brightest color and pulls very pink on the lips. It is a berry shade, but because it is so pigmented and has a glossy finish, it takes a little bit of work to apply. Regardless, it's nice for when you want to go big on the lips and light on the rest of your makeup!

2) CLINIQUE: BROADEST BERRY (middle swatch)
This is my favorite everyday lip color. It is similar to the first shade, but has more brown and less pink in it. This is a color that can look very mature, but is so natural that anyone can wear it. This formula is also amazing because it stays put, but is also moisturizing and feels good on.

3) NARS: CRUELLA (top swatch)
This is the best red lip color that I have ever owned. It was an old birthday freebie from Sephora and is my go to sexy, bold lip. This is a very neutral toned red that is bold without being too bright. It works well with all skintones because it doesn't pull blue or orange and the matte finish is perfect for the holiday season!

I have a lot of gift guides and fun holiday posts and videos in the works, but if there's anything specific you'd like to see, let me know! And if you have any great tips or favorite holiday lip colors, I'd love to read them in the comments below!

So, the election happened...

Not trying to get too political on here, but there are some things I felt I needed to write about the election. These are completely my opinions, take it or leave it, but please be respectful of that.

Easy Everyday Fall Makeup Routine

It's been a few weeks since my last video, but I'm back with a makeup tutorial! This has been my everyday makeup look for the past few months because it is so fast to do and looks great! The video quality isn't the greatest, I'm trying to make do with my iphone until I go back home for Christmas and I'm still trying to figure out lighting/sound when filming in my new apartment!

I hope you enjoyed this video! If you did, it would mean a lot if you gave the video a thumbs up and subscribed! Let me know in the comments what other videos you'd like to see for the holiday season!
