Use Memories to Control Your Happiness

It's common knowledge that memories can make you feel certain ways. If you spend too much time thinking about something sad, you'll eventually start to feel sad. Spend too much time on something someone did to piss you off? You'll start to blow things out of proportion and build up hatred inside of you. Everyone wants to be happy. That's probably one of the biggest goals (if not the biggest goal) in life, yet a lot of people let this one thing hold them back from living to their potential. You can change your mood instantly, just by changing the way you think and remember. 

Let's take an example from my life. A lot of times when I hear people talking about their friends or classmates from high school it's about the negatives. The bad things that these people did, the way that these people hurt them, how stupid they were, how needy they were... That doesn't do anyone any good. It brings up so much negative energy that it literally brings down everyone that hears it. There is no room or need for negativity like that in life. 

Well, what should we do instead? Think of the positives! You can give me the names of anyone from high school and I will give you a positive memory of them. It's not that I don't have bad things to say about them, because I do, but it's that I would rather remember the best versions of people than the worst versions. I want to attract positivity in to my life, and there's no way that I can do that when all I focus on is the negatives. 

Here's my challenge for you. Whenever you talk about a person in the next week only say positive things. Sure if something big happens and you need to rant to feel better, do that. But if you are just talking about people, gossiping, or reminiscing, focus on the positives. Laughter because of funny memories is 1000x better than laughter at the expense of another human, and the more you do it, the more you'll realize this. 

Let's manifest happiness this week. Let's be good, nice, humans this week. Let's change our memories.

My Week on Instagram #23

Monday 3/21/16
I double posted on Monday #sorrynotsorry! The first picture was from an amazing place called Kure (full review going up on my travel blog soon!) We ate it as we were walking through downtown Portland in between shopping at Pioneer Place. The second picture was at the Lan Su Chinese Gardens in Chinatown. It was seriously the prettiest place that we found as we were trying to escape the rain!

Tuesday 3/22/16
This waffle was amazing! It was in this crazy hipster neighborhood and was such a cute hole in the wall type of place. I got the blueberry cheesecake waffle, which was just incredible! (Excuse the self promotion here, but I will be reviewing this on my travel blog soon too!)

Wednesday 3/23/16
We went to the Portland Art Museum on Wednesday, which was pretty interesting. I love abstract art, and this was one of my favorites that we saw there. The second picture was taken at the Trailblazers vs Mavericks game! I'm not a huge fan of either team (I'm a Lakers girl all the way), but I do love Damian Lillard, so it was super fun.

Friday 3/25/16
On Friday I was in San Francisco. We stayed at the Hilton in the Financial District, which was such a nice hotel! The view from our hotel room was even nicer and gave such a gorgeous view of the financial district and part of Chinatown!

Saturday 3/26/16
Although this picture was posted on Saturday, it was taken on Friday! It was from a boat I was on that toured the bay, went under the Golden Gate Bridge, and around Alcatraz. That boat tour was one of the more spontaneous parts of this trip, but it was only $15 for an hour of fun, which was so worth it!

3 Spring Nail Trends

Hey guys!
Spring is here! I thought I'd share three of my favorite spring nail trends and nine of my favorite nail polishes with you today! This collage is shopable, so click on an image if you'd like to buy it!

Row 1: Nudes
Nude nail polishes are timeless. They always look chic and better than the outdated french tips. I like going with shiny cream finishes during the spring because it always looks really fresh. 

Row 2: Earthy Roses
These are the other "neutrals" in my life. I like going for the dusty rose/lavender colors because they're a little more grown up than the pastel colors. These colors in metallic finishes are my personal favorite because they reflect light in the most beautiful way. They also add a bit of statement without clashing with your outfit like brighter colors can. 

Row 3: Pastels!
These are the epitome of spring nails. I was bashing on them a little bit earlier, but I do love pastels during the spring. If you're worried about it looking too juvenile, you can try using one as a statement nail (perhaps with the other nails painted in a nude shade!) or on your toes for a somewhat hidden pop of color!

Saturday 3/19/16
I flew in to Portland, Oregon Saturday night, so this picture was taken in my hotel room! That flight was the absolute worst flight because it was so noisy and just plain uncomfortable. I didn't even eat dinner Saturday night because I felt so gross after the flight, so I showered and stayed in bed watching Ratatouille :P

Sunday 3/20/16
Sunday was my first full day in Portland, so we did a lot! One of the things we did was go to Voodoo Doughnuts. The doughnut that I'm eating is called "dirty old bastard" and it was so delicious! It was peanut butter, chocolate, and oreos :)

Sunday Part 2
I double posted on Sunday! This was from Sunday night when me and my friend went to a hockey game! This was actually my first hockey game and it was the Winterhawks against the Thunderbirds and was pretty fun. I especially enjoyed all the body checking and hitting!

Music Mania!

Hi guys!
On my other blog (that I haven't posted on in a really long time oops!) I used to do posts where I shared the songs/artists/bands that I've been loving. I loved writing those posts and since I've been listening to some new songs, I thought it'd be fun to do today!

BØRNS - American Money
I am obsessed with this song. Seriously it's been on repeat for the last few days! I just love Borns in general, and this version of this song is everything

St. Lucia - Dancing On Glass
This song is so addicting! It has a crazy 80s vibe to it, which I absolutely adore, but it's also one of those songs that just puts me in a great mood! It's something I listen to when I need a little pick me up or a break from studying because it is so energizing and makes me want to get up and dance!

Weezer - Beverly Hills
Such an old song (I know), but one of those classics! I've been listening to a lot of 90s music on Pandora lately, and this has been playing a lot and I love it! 

Thirty Seconds To Mars - City of Angels
This is another older song (like a couple years old), but one of my all time favorites. I love the whole Love Lust Faith + Dreams album, but this music video is amazing on another level. It is the most real, authentic, beautiful mini-documentary I've ever seen. 

Coleman Hell - 2 Heads
I became obsessed with this song in December when I was back home. Whenever I heard it on the radio, I would blast it and start singing out loud, like a crazy person. The banjo in this song is the best part, but the song itself is the most addicting thing ever.

How To Order Healthy At Smoothie Places

Hi guys!
I love a good smoothie place! Back in Hawaii, it's usually Jamba Juice or some local joints, but here in Reno, it's been Keva Juice because there's one in the student union building! Smoothies are notorious for being those foods that can either be really healthy, or full of fat and bad calories! Here are five tips to help you make good choices at smoothie places!

1) Avoid Dairy
Dairy is just not that good for you. A lot of people are lactose intolerant or lactose sensitive, so you want to avoid it if you can. Dairy is also really high in fat, calories, and hormones, so it is not a health food at all. Try to go for all fruit smoothies or ones with plant based milk alternatives (like soy or almond) instead to save on calories and fat! 

2) Size Wise
Smoothies are great for meals because they have fiber, tons of carbohydrates, and are relatively healthy! They can be bad, though, if you don't size wisely! It is so easy to over drink your calories, so try to stick with either the smallest size or the middle one, unless you're going to split with someone! Be aware of how many calories is in what you're drinking, especially if it's a regular thing or if you're trying to lose weight!

3) Avoid Stimulants
I know at Keva Juice they have a smoothie with Rockstar and at both Jamba and Keva they have smoothies with coffee in them. I don't like having stimulants, especially caffeine, in smoothies because it takes away from some of the good nutritional value and sugar and caffeine is asking for an energy crash later on!
4) Go Whole!
Try to order smoothies that use whole frozen fruits instead of sorbets. Sorbets and sherbets often have lots of added sugar, so whole fruits are a healthier way to drink your smoothies! 

5) Watch Your Boosts
If you're already taking a daily vitamin or are eating a balanced diet, there's not a reason to add vitamin supplements to your smoothies. It's not good or bad to get supplements in your smoothies, but if a supplement sounds too good to be true (will make you burn fat faster!), then it probably is.

Monday 3/7/16
Monday was my friend Julia's birthday! We've been friends since Kindergarten, but now she goes to college in New York and I'm in Nevada. This picture was taken at my 8th grade dance, which is why we look like little fetuses and I have braces on! I know a lot of people wouldn't post a picture like this of the awkward days, but Julia and I have been through everything together, so this picture only seems fitting to post!

9 Sandals For Spring Break

Hi guys!
So this post is only really relevant if you're going somewhere warm and beachy for spring break, but if not, maybe flag this post and keep it for summer! Here are six sandals and three slippers that are perfect for your spring break getaway!

So let's start with the flip flops. I love a flip flop with a bit of a wedge because they're so easy to walk in and are usually pretty comfortable! The sandals are all pretty flat, or if they have height it's with a platform, because nobody wants to walk around in heels (even wedges) all day. And let's be real, heels in sand is a recipe for disaster! I like strappy things a lot, and call me basic, but birkenstocks are pretty rad as well!

How To Pick Your Friends

Friends are a crucial part of our lives because as humans, we have a need for connection and socialization. In elementary school, making friends was so easy. If you were in class together, you were automatically friends. This progressively got harder in middle school, then high school, and don't even get me started on college and the years after that. It is so tempting for you to keep all the friends you can get. To keep the same friends you had in high school once you're in college, and keep the same friends you had in college once you're an adult trying to make it in the real world. Here are some tips on how to pick your friends. 

1) Make sure they're on the same wavelength as you
It's all to easy to stay friends out of convenience rather than because you want to. You are the sum of the people that you surround yourself with, so choose to surround yourself with smart, accomplished, motivated people instead of people content with barely getting by. There's a saying that goes something like, "if you're the smartest one in the room, find another room" and that is so true. 

2) Ditch the drama
There's probably someone in your life that constantly makes you question yourself. They either drag you in to their problems, or their problems with other people always end up impacting your life. Quite frankly, they're drama. Drama never makes anyone feel good or happy, and you don't need it in your life. Slowly weed out the drama queens in your life, and you'll be so much happier. 

3) Only be friends with people that put in the effort
Friendship is a two way street, and it get so frustrating when you're the only one putting in effort. If someone isn't willing to make plans with you, call you without you initiating it, or bails on you at the last minute, they're not worth having in your life. 

4) Make sure they're real
There are so many fake friends out there. There are so many people only willing to stand by you through the good times only to bail when you need them the most. At the same time, there are also some people so closed in that they don't ever let you close enough to know the real them. You need to make sure that the friends you have are real friends. That they're willing to be there for you, and that they will allow you to be there for them in return. 

Friendships is one of those weird things. There are no rules or guidelines for picking your friends, and it's just one of those things we need to learn as we go. To hear more about my friendship tips, you can watch this video!

5 Ways To Make Your Day Better

It's hard not to compare your day or life to those of the people around you. With instagram, twitter, and facebook, we're constantly reminded of everything we don't have and everything we can't do. Instead of getting sucked in to the vortex of self pity, here are five ways to make your day even better than it already is. 

1) Listen to your favorite song
Everyone has "that" song that always puts them in a good mood when listening to it. For me, that's Beverly Hills by Weezer or All Star by Smash Mouth. Listen to those songs, sing ridiculously loud (or mouth the words if you're with other people) and let go of all your stress and tension. 

2) Treat yourself
I'm thinking food, when I say "treat yourself," but you could also go shopping or something. I like treating with food because it's instantly gratifying rather than online shopping where you have to wait to get the item. Either way, let yourself feel happy and loved. 

3) Exercise
Exercise releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy! But really, nobody feels worse after exercising (unless you get injured or something). Do something that you love and don't be too hard on yourself. My personal favorite is putting on one of those youtube dance tutorials and doing that (if you're looking for a good one, Matt Stefanina makes bomb a$$ tutorials)!

4) Dream
Our society crushes our dreams from such an early age and it becomes increasingly harder to allow ourselves to dream as we age. Write down your goals in a journal no matter how lofty or impossible they seem. Allow yourself to work towards something and fantasize about the future. Alternatively, you could create a pinterest board dedicated to travel or something like that and go crazy! 

5) Connect with others
Sometimes you just need to talk to someone. Social media makes it seem like we're connected to everyone because we are able to see what's going on in everyone's lives, but at the same time it leaves us lonely. We need human connection. Not through screens, but face to face. If not actually in person than at least over Facetime or Skype. It always feels good to talk to someone who you know cares about you and to be able to connect. 

Some of these things take very little time to do, yet can make your entire day or week brighter. At the core of this we need to realize that we have the power to change our outlooks, to make our days good or bad, and that we need to use that power to change our lives. You can be a victim or a fighter each and everyday and that choice is yours. These five things are just a start. There are so many different ways to make your life better.

Thursday: 3/3/16
If you didn't know, 3/3 is girls day in Japanese culture! Usually I celebrate by eating mochi or something at home, but now that I'm in college, this day was relatively uncelebrated! Now, let's talk about this picture... It was taken after my suitemate's birthday dinner (she's the one in the middle) and is my roommates and suitemates (minus one)! Honestly, this isn't the most flattering picture of me because the lens was a fisheye of sort, so it stretches me wide, but I wanted to post it anyway because these are the girls that I'm usually around the most!

Friday: 3/4/16
This caption says it all! I've been so busy lately that I either end up scarfing half a bowl of cereal before class or eating clif bars in my lectures! I think last week, I ate clif bars in class two or three days (and got smoothies during my break), which is somewhat of a well-rounded meal I suppose! This picture is from brunch over winter break! It was sweet bread french toast with fruit and was so good! I actually reviewed the restaurant I ate at on my travel blog, so to see more pictures of brunch, click here!

My Love Hate Relationship With Blogging

I've been blogging for over three years now and I've developed a strange love hate relationship with it. At the core, I know that I love blogging and that I couldn't imagine life without it, but at the same time it is so easy for me to get caught up in the negatives and stress out over what was meant to be a fun hobby for me. 

The past two years has been a struggle for me. I want this blog to be a business of sorts, so I've been trying to treat it as such. That comes with benefits, such as getting to collaborate with brands I've loved since I was a kid, but also a bunch of downsides. I get caught up in how much I should be posting, what I should be writing about, sharing on my social networks just the right amount, and most of all making sure everything works with "my brand". What the hell is "my brand?" I couldn't even tell you. But trying to make sure everything looks "perfect" and fits the theme of the blog and all that stuff is so tedious and draining, and at the end of the day, I still feel like I'm doing it wrong. 

There are times that I get so caught up in this business side that I forget why I started blogging in the first place, which was for me. For my happiness and joy. I'm sure you've noticed that this year I've been posting less on my blog and way less on my youtube channel and that was my choice. I want to only write or film when I am feeling it and when I know I can produce great things. I guess blogging is a balance of sorts. On one hand you have all the businessy type stuff like accounting and PR and all that and on the other hand you have fun and happiness, passion and creativity. I'm going to try figure out that balance and we'll all be a lot happier and better for it.

Dorm Food Round 2!

Hi guys!
At the beginning of the year, I did a video going through the snacks and food that I kept in my dorm room. If you missed that video, you can watch it here! That video is great, and I still have similar things that I shared in that video, but the new semester started and I just went shopping for a semester's worth of snacks, so I wanted to share!

I do have a meal plan, so pretty much all of my lunches and dinners are eaten there with the exception of a meal at Panda or Great Full Gardens once or twice a week! Also, I pretty much always have cereal because I can use excess swipes on that at the end of the week! 

Let me know what kinds of snacks you like to keep on hand! I've been obsessed with Clif Bars lately (especially the peanut butter one), and those apple sauce packets are always great on the fly! Also, my next video will be sample meals that I eat either from the dining hall or from the restaurants/starbucks in the area, so make sure you're subscribed to my youtube channel!

5 Ways To Stay Hydrated

Winter is the worst time of year for hydration. Our skin dries out, we don't feel as thirsty, and we often neglect hydration. This sucks because hydration is one of the most important things for our bodies! Here are five easy ways to stay hydrated! The more you do these things, the better you'll feel, and soon they'll become a habit!

1) Start Strong
The first thing that a lot of people do in the morning is make a cup of coffee and drink that. This is not the best thing for you because coffee is considered a diuretic, which means that it'll force you to lose liquid and can easily dehydrate you. Instead of reaching for the coffee first thing, try starting with water instead! I try to drink 16 ounces of water within fifteen minutes of waking up to jump start my body and to help replenish the fluids that I lost while sleeping. Try to have at least two cups (but the more, the better!) first thing in the morning so you aren't starting the day off dehydrated!

2) Check Your Pee
This one is kind of gross, but try to notice the color of your urine the next time you go to the bathroom. It should be pale yellow or clear because that means you're adequately hydrated. If it's bright or dark yellow, you need to drink more because your body is dehydrated. This doesn't make you more hydrated, but by staying aware of your hydration you know when to drink more! The only exception to this is if you're taking vitamins or something similar because excess vitamins can be excreted through urine, which would lead to a darker color even if you're adequately hydrated. 

3) Bring It With You
You are hopefully bringing a water bottle with you to work or school already, but if you aren't, then start! It is so handy to be able to drink when you need to without having to leave the room to go to a water fountain. I use a Hydro Flask because it's vacuum insulated so it keeps my hot drinks hot and my cold drinks really cold! 

4) Drink What You Like
I 100% believe that you should be drinking water as much as possible, but if you will drink more if the water is flavored or if it's tea, then I'm all for that! Try to stay away from things with chemicals and flavor your water yourself with fruits and herbs! If you're drinking tea, know that tea can have slight diuretic effects depending on the caffeine content of it. If you're drinking water along with your tea, that shouldn't be a problem and the diuretic effect of tea is no where near the one of coffee! Also, if you're drinking juice, try to get it fresh so you retain the nutrients, but any juice is better than a diet coke!

*Side Note: A quick word on juices here! I like juices and I think that they can be beneficial for a quick jolt of energy. I would recommend drinking a juice instead of an energy drink because juice can help replenish your glycogen stores instead of just drugging your brain like caffeine does. They shouldn't be drunk all the time, especially if you are trying to lose weight just because they have calories that are easy to overlook if you're drinking them instead of eating them!

5) Educate Yourself
The things that dehydration does to you is downright scary! It can impair body function, it can make you less sharp mentally, and can lead to fatigue. By learning what it does to you, you can start to realize when your body is telling you that you're dehydrated or you can scare yourself in to drinking more often. 

Before we go, I want to say that there is something as too much water. You would need to drink a lot of water in a relatively short period for something like that to happen, but don't go overboard. Drink when you're thirsty, when you wake up, at meals, and after exercise. Listen to your body and you'll soon find the point where your body is the happiest! I've never really been that spontaneous in life. I like to have a plan or an idea of what to do. I guess this comes from living back home in Hawaii because for the longest time I needed a plan so I could get a ride when I couldn't drive. Even over winter break, I spent so much time trying to plan because my friends had issues getting rides (none of them drive lol) and I needed to figure out what car I could drive and all that stuff. But the best moments in life are the spontaneous ones. I don't really remember the planned brunches I went to over my winter break, but I remember what came after that. Whether it was dying of laughter driving on the freeway because I was so lost and didn't know what exit to take or making my friend park for me because I couldn't enter the parking spot at the right angle. 

Take today for example. I went to a volunteer thing because my friend asked me to and I said yes (a post about being a "yes person" is coming soon!). We got a ride from a guy that we had never met before, but all clicked and had such great convos in the car. Then once we got to the hotel, we wandered through the casino trying to find the room we were supposed to meet everyone at. Then we actually did the volunteer "work".  After that, we ended early so we got ice cream (randomly enough, the Atlantis in Reno has great ice cream) and talked some more. We talked about in-n-out a ton, so we decided to make a stop on the way back to school to get some. Then while at in-n-out my friend gets this guy's number, while me and the guy are hiding outside watching them through the window. It was pure craziness and spontaneity and ended up being so much fun. Even if what we were doing wasn't fun, we were able to let loose and laugh and eat amazing food, which is all great. 

I guess that the whole point of this is that none of us are going to remember the actual volunteering, but will remember in-n-out, the conversations we had, and how hard we laughed. The best memories that are made are the spontaneous ones. Take chances in life. Take a risk, put yourself out there, and go with your desires and instincts once in a while because that's when you'll be your happiest and when you'll make memories. I know spontaneity can be hindered by others, but once you find your squad that is just as crazy and fun as you, memories that'll last a lifetime will be created.
