How to Ace Your Finals

Hey guys!
I just finished my finals today and I thought that I'd do a little post with some of my top tips for acing your finals. I know a lot of people have already had their finals, so this post may be a little late, but when I was in high school I didn't have finals until January, so maybe this will be applicable to some of you!

1) STUDY
I know you're probably like "no shit sherlock", but I think it's really important to prepare well. I'm not going to give you advice on a particular way to study because we all learn differently. For me personally, I like to do one hour of hardcore studying (no phone, no unnecessary technology, no distractions) with 15 minutes of break between the study hours. Also, I want to say that I think that there is no better way to study math than actually doing the math, so it can be a really good idea to google practice problems w/ solutions. 

2) SLEEP
Some people get off bragging about how they pulled an all nighter before a big test and all I can think is "wow you're stupid." Your brain needs sleep in order to retain information, and when you deprive yourself of sleep, you're not going to be as sharp mentally as you would be if you were well rested. I got well over the necessary 8 hours of sleep before my finals and I strongly suggest you do the same. 

3) EAT 
If you're like me, you get really stressed out about finals and you get really busy studying and you totally forget to eat. This is so bad for a multitude of reasons! Make sure you're eating regularly and that you up your intake of carbohydrates because that is your body's main source of energy and that's what you need to be mentally sharp. Also make sure you're eating lean clean plant based foods. 

4) USE SUBSTANCES WISELY
Okay so let's be real: it's extremely easy to get drugs like Adderall that can supposedly help improve mental focus and academic performance. I know that me saying not to do this will fall on deaf ears, but if you're planning on this make sure that you know the side effects. On my floor this year one girl had to go to the ER because she took her friend's adderall and had a racing heart beat and some other side effects. 
Going along with this, caffeine is a drug. It is a stimulant and it can also lead to its own problems if taken in excess. Sure you can have a cup of coffee or two, but if energy drinks is your poison of choice, make sure you keep track of how many you have because excess caffeine is not good for you. 

5)  GET YOUR GAME FACE ON
I like to think of finals as a big game. You do all the preparation for it, like an athlete does for a big game, and your final is your moment. Eat a good breakfast and do your "game day" routine. For me that's waking up a couple hours before the test, wearing comfy clothes, no makeup, glasses, drinking a cup of tea while eating breakfast and reviewing notes. The biggest thing is to have a good pump up song. You need to go in to your test feeling amazing, having high energy, and knowing you're going to do well. For me, this song is All Star by Smash Mouth. I blast it in my headphones right before I head out the door. It puts me in such a good mood and just helps me get ready to take on the test.

  1. Agree with those points! Planning ahead is key. I used to cram for my tests the very minutes and it just ended stressing me out haha.

  2. haha yeah I've been there too! I think that it's much better and healthier to start way in advance so you can feel confident and well rested on test day!
